AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: Great multimedia, office application, and gaming processor with an awesome cost/benefit ratio for the DIY'er

Weakness: Heat, heat, heat... Did I say heat?

This processor has fell into the same mold the AMD Athlon Thunderbird line did when comparing it to the Intel processor lines. For most everything that computer users do with their systems, the Athlon 64 outperforms the Pentium 4 on nearly all accounts. The price differential between the Athlon 64 and P4 are about the same now if you compare a 3.0 Prescott or Northwood to the 3000+ chip. But, if you weigh in the performance differences, you have your better cost/benefit with the AMD product.

Really the only areas the Intel products have been shown to better the A64 competitor is with video editing and Photoshop. But, really the time differences will be negligible to most end users. The only thing I will warn people about is make sure you have proper cpu and case cooling.

When I upgraded systems, I retained the same case that was using a 450W PSU and already had 3 case fans (1 side, 2 rear). Right out of the gate I had tremendous heat issues. I was recording 50+ degrees Celsius on the processor. The system was not loving life at this point. I had even coupled the case fans with a Zalman CPU fan over the stock AMD fan that came with the retail box. But the only solution was adding 3 more fans in the front to create airflow to the system. Now everything is great. But, be forewarned... Heat is a major issue. Other than that... no complaints at all.

All i can say is your processor and hsf aren't making contact properly.
As my athlon64 3000+ is connected via standard amd hsf and records 28 degrees and 33 degrees under full load after playing doom iii for 2 hours non stop.
She is as stable as a bird.
In fact the Athlon64 is noted for it's superb cool ability's under load.......i couldn't believe just how cool this cpu operates under load....

Disregard this guys review, he's obviously just a newbie and doesn't know what he's talking about....

I suggest you get your computer sorted mate or your pc is gonna end up dying a slow death.....

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: Fast modern processor with a fantastic price/performance ratio.

Weakness: Cool'n'Quiet support is lacking in Windows 2003. Nonexistant technical support

This processor has one of the best price/performance ratios of any modern processor. It is a great processor unless you are looking for the latest and greatest. The processor came with a heat sink and fan, but enough people said that the fan was unacceptably loud so I did not even try to use it. I went with a Zalman cooler instead.

The main downside is that there is no Cool'n'Quiet driver for Windows 2003. I asked AMD if a similar driver for WinXP or Win2k was suitable, but they never responded.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: cheaper socket, very stable

Weakness: gets a bit hotter bc of newcastle core

Well i mainly purchased this setup for a work comp at it runs very smoothly with no problems. I have run a few intensive apps and games such as photshop and doom3 and it all runs and works great. The socket 754 chip is much cheaper than others bc the socket may be phased out soon, so it makes it a steal bargain. Give it a try if your tight on cash and need a fast system.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: Very fast, 64 bit support, great 32 bit performance, good price.

Weakness: On the soon-to-be discontinued 754 socket.

This processor is a great value. It performes great, and is much more efficient than a Pentium 4 with its clock cycles. Uses performance ratings instead of GHZ for speed, which is good, because the performance rating also reflects the bus speed and the L2 cache. Does not require registered RAM like the FX version does. If you need a processor now, I would recommend this one, but if you can wait a little, get one for the new socket 939.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: 64-bit, strong performance

Weakness: not the best

This processor is certainly perfect for the price. For a 64-bit processor, it's not too expensive, but its strong enough to carry through the next gen (hopefully)
I fully recommend AMD over the high priced Intel!

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: 64 bit (but still compatible with 32 bit OS + apps)

Weakness: ???

I have this processor running on an MSI motherboard with 1 G RAM (OCZ). The system runs great under Windows XP. Hopefully the new 64 bit Windows comes out soon so you can utilize the 64 bit capabilities. Great proc.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: Great processor. Runs cool and can support anything that can be thrown at it.

Weakness: Only supports up to ddr400 as of now. The next wave should support ddr500.

Not much difference in performance compared to the 3200+ while saving a few bucks. Highly recommend this processor to anyone looking to upgrade. If you are not looking to overclock, stock fan is sufficient.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: Superior proccessor; great speed and accessability

This is the first AMD processor I've every used and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised. It works exceptionally well, with no control problems. I would recommend AMD over Intel any time. This is a superior product.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: Very Fast, reliable.

Weakness: High heat.

I would recommend this processor to anyone who wants speed. I was (nicely) surprised by how fast this CPU is. I still need to put it through some tests, but have had no problems so far. My reference/comparison was a Pentium 4, 2.0GHz. The only draw back if any is the Heat. This processor does put the heat out. Just make sure you have enough fans/ventilation in and around your box and you should be fine. I have it running on an ASUS K8V SE Deluxe motherboard. No complaints.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: Fastest current processor for the price!

Weakness: Not many programs written to take advantage of 64-bit at this time.

For about $200, this processor rocks! Even though the Athlon64 3200's and above have a larger cache, in most tests I have seen, it makes little difference in game play.

UbiSoft has promised a 64-bit version of Far Cry very soon, which will be a real test of this processor's true ability.

Give it a decent video card and some good quality DDR PC3200 memory and you can get a killer system for under $1000 if you are careful.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: 64-bit, Fast

Weakness: none

The AMD Athlon 64 is definitely the best processor out on the market today. It is fast, and it gets everything done quick. As a loyal AMD customer, I am proud to say that this one is definitely beats any Intel processor hands down! I do not overclock, and I've never had problems with the processor crashing. My friend does have an Athlon 64 3200+ which he overclocked and I can't help but notice that his PC crashes frequently. I could be wrong in blaming his overclocked CPU, but I'm just suggesting that if you overclock, do beware.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz Processor

Strengths: see below, box is not big enough

Weakness: weaker on media than pentium, does not have a few of the pentium features, if you had problems anywhere you may still have it - the cpu is not everything. not 939.

This is the best processor I've ever owned.

The 64 bit compatibility is not used in many applications yet, in part due to lack of 64 bit support from Intel (and thus a wider proportion of PCs), and also because retrofitting probably has some problems, and the speed has been speculated over. Most of the negative "reports" are from Intel fans. Some AMD supporters say it is faster, giving various multiplications. AMD reports a picture-editor program that is still a beta can run up to 56% faster in 64 bit, and Microsoft says it is because there is more data per clock cycle. I don't understand it technically and won't bother as "twice as fast" has never meant really twice as fast, especially with single components, and something new will probably overtake it anyway.

The Cool and Quiet technology is actually a very good feature - the processor usually ran much cooler (about 10 degrees celsius) and at times the fan slowed so much (below 1000 rpm) that it set off my motherboard's alarm. I don't know if the DDR controller or HyperTransport make a difference, but the processor is fast.

I went from not being able to do Windows Media HD at all to being able to watch 1080p. I had a Shuttle motherboard, Athlon XP 1600+, MSI GeForceFX 5600XT VTDR with 128mb of ram, 384mb pc2100 DDR-SDRAM, a 60gb 7200rpm hard drive and a DVD burner, and upgraded to this processor and a refurbished MSI K8N Neo Platinum (yes, the nForce3 250gb) which I got for 237 total - $160 for this, $77 for the motherboard. My frame rates did not go up much, but that might be because I had to reinstall Windows (I guess most people aren't upgrading so this shouldn't be an issue) and haven't had time to optimize my graphics card (as I had quite a bunch before). The game America's Army, however, was significantly less dragging - for seconds before it would freeze, it wasn't just bad framerates.

I can't tell you as much as the review sites so please visit techreport, tomshardware, motherboards, amd's website and more. They were, however using an GeForceFX 5900 and 1gb of Corsair's XMS (fast) DDR SDRAM so I haven't quite gotten there.

I bought this processor about a month ago for a new computer I was building. The computer runs at a blazing speed and I have no complaints. Definitely beats out the Intel processors I used to have.
