Seagate 5 GB External Hard Drive - Retail

Strengths: Inexpensive - cost per Gb low compared to stick memory Size - relatively small Portablity - good Ease of use - very good

Weakness: Not as small as stick memory

I obtained a 5 Gb drive recently, and use it at work for portability of important files. I also use it to store a significant library of MP3 music that I can then play on any computer with a USB port. Great timesaver!

Pocket External 5GB Hard Drive (USB 2.0, 3600 RPM,...

Strengths: Size, capacity, price

Weakness: Warranty

The short of this -- I LIKE IT!

It's not often I find a product that really exceeds my expectations -- this one might not soar past them, but it's a really well thought out product.

The capcity -- 5GB is just about the right size to guarantee that you can put a DVD5 on it if you need to (the model that's just about to come out is a 8GB... 9GB would have been smart for DVD9 compatability -- so I didn't wait for it).

The performance is good. While the drive doesn't have the same characteristics as a 3.5" in a USB2.0 enclosure, you probably own't notice that, both reads and writes work well.

The packaging is super. Seagate obviously put a great deal into making the package as small as possible while giving good protection for the 1" drive inside, and convenient storage for the USB cable.

The unit is heavier than I would have expected, but it is a drive, and it needs protection -- so I'm willing to look over that.

The only thing that bothers me about it is the 1 year warranty. Seagate has gone out of it's way to be a leader (since July 2004) with 5 year warranties on their 3.5" and 2.5" drives, why they don't offer the same on their external is beyond me.

Seagate Pocket External 5GB Hard Drive

Strengths: Price, Capacity, Size

Weakness: None

Nothing makes me more interested in buying something than one of my relatives telling me it's good.

I've wanted on of these to replace an older USB1.0 64MB drive I've had for years, but been waiting for something around this size at a really good price.

There's not much difference in all these things from my perspective. They have different shapes, sizes, etc -- some fit on your keychain, some have caps... all that comes down to personal preferences.

This one is a little bigger than some of them; probably average in thickness, long in length. Covered with soft plastic (not sure that matters too much). Has a place to put it on your key chain, but it's made of soft plastic too so I wouldn't trust it not to give way. Has a cap, again made of soft plastic -- so probably will keep out moisture and you might get away if you drop it in water with no damage -- but I don't think I will be trying that.

Comes with a neck strap (you can put in the same place I was talking about for a key chain -- and probably better for it than a keychain).

Comes with a extension cable so you can plug it into a usb connecter that's not got extra room around it.

For me it's a simple matter of price and capacity -- I just want it to keep some personal files on so I got them with me -- you have to decide what you're going to use it for and whether you like this one better than the others.

Seagate 5 GB External Hard Drive - Retail

Strengths: Least cost, handy to use, excellent transfer rate for USB 1.0 or 2.0.

Weakness: none

It is so handy and fast to use that I use it to daily backup the most important files in my home business pc's which are otherwise only backed up on a weekly basis.

Seagate 5 GB External Hard Drive - Retail

Strengths: 5 gb, small and compact design with USB cord

Weakness: Price

This is a great compact design for transferring files from one computer to another. I really like the retractable USB cord, 5 GB hard drive, and compact design. I would strongly recommend this product to someone who need a compact storeage drive.

Bad Product

Strengths: Easy to use, when it works, cute, pretty blue light.

Weakness: Does not work.

I purchased the 5 gig. drive after reading great reviews. I trasfered files from my pc to another and it worked great. Did not use for 3 weeks and then tried to use it and received error message No Seagate device found. I did not drop it or misuse. It set on my desk at home for 3 weeks. I live alone so no one touched it. I tried every suggested fix on Seagate Support web site and no help. Cannot get in touch with Seagate Tech. Support. So save your money. Cannot return to Amazon either. A $85.00 lesson learn

Seagate 5 GB External Hard Drive - Retail

Strengths: Can transfer LARGE amounts of data. Reasonably priced.

Weakness: A little slow but not unreasonable for the amount of data that you can carry

I wanted a way to transfer files from work to home because even with broadband, it takes a while to pull uplarge data files. I kept waiting for a large enough flash drive to hold a few gigs. Then I found this 5 gig hard drive thats fits in your pocket. Its perfect and holds everything I need.

Seagate 5 GB External Hard Drive - Retail

Strengths: light, compact, and large capacity

Weakness: little expensive

In addition to its large capacity, this prodcut has several outstanding features. For example, the retractable USB cord helps you carry and use it more easily. And, it just works great, better than thumb drives do.

Great little device

Strengths: Storage size

Weakness: overall size

Good design, very light, and easy to carry. Integrated cable makes it easier to remember to bring along compared to jump drives. Price point is incredible. Transfer rate is quite good as well.

Seagate 5 GB External Hard Drive - Retail

Strengths: Ultra-Light, Ultra-Small with 5GB of space

Weakness: none

This is the cheapest mobile memory unit in the market by far. Otherwise try to pack 5 GB of stuff in your pocket with 150 USD otherwise! Thats the best mobile backup unit i ever had. Now i have all my personal stuff in my pocket wherever i go. WOW

Seagate 5 GB External Hard Drive - Retail

Strengths: Huge capacity for pocket drive. Attractive price compared to small flash drives.

Weakness: Larger than thumb/key/flash drives, much larger. It's a hard drive so it's easier to be damaged.

I don't know what to do with this drive yet. It's too bulky to be put in pocket and carried everyday. If I am to trasport 5GB data, I would rather burn a DVD.

good enough large USB drive

Strengths: purchased at a fair price from Amazon shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer most of the time and usually disconnects properly

Weakness: I was very disappointed that Seagate wasn't honoring their $15 rebate.

Their rebate site said it hadn't gotten the rebate request and their support girl immediately hung up on me for no apparent reason. The product is very satisfactory, but customers appear to be a very low priority.

Seagate Pocket Drive Very Tough

Strengths: Very shock resistant; works on every USB-capable computer I've plugged it into; harder to misplace than a flash drive.

Weakness: Blue LED attracts weirdos to try and steal it!

Was given 5.0 GB Pocket Drive as performance perk by work. It has eliminated carrying (or losing) multiple diagnostic software CD's; also it can carry large amounts of logged data back to the workbench. It has reduced by 25 to 50 percent the time spent loading diagnostics and retrieving data. I have bumped it while using it, and dropped it while not attached to the PC. It continues to work flawlessly. It also enhances security by keeping me from having to connect computerized equipment to a network to retrieve the data.

AMAZING!

Strengths: very small and light and very fast.

Weakness: none so far

This is a great buy if you need a small hard drive that you need to carry around with you wherever you go. It fits in the palm of your hand and I use it every day.

Too slow for portable apps

Strengths: Quiet operation. Cool Blue light.

Weakness: Far too slow. Case needn't be so thick and plasticky, this feels like it could break in your pocket

The 5MB/s write rate sounded OK to me, however it is the poor performance with small files that kills this drive. My portable app suite took 30 minutes to unzip a 120MB file and the apps are hampered to the point of being useless. If you want to transport large files you might like this drive. If you want to use it for small files, or for running apps then you will be disappointed

The case also feels a little fragile and other reviews have said it marks easily. The rotating mechanism is a nice touch but it makes the case unecessarily thick. Microdrives are way thinner than USB connectors, the connector should be stowed on its side rather than the way it is.

This drive will be returned. I would rather have a slightly larger (though still bus powered) drive with more performance

Seagate 5.0 GB USB

One of the advantages of USB 2.0 is that, like FireWire, it is bus-powered technology. This means that the unit doesn't need a separate power supply, but gets it's juice from the power supplied by the USB port. In practical use, that's good and bad. It's good because you don't have any power supply to drag along and potentially lose. It's bad because some computer USB connections (typically those...
