Strengths: Cheap and great for DATA backups (only!)
Weakness: DVD Movies burned DO NOT PLAY; laser not powerful enough?
Good burner IF and only IF you plan on doing data backups only. If you plan on backing up any dvd movies DO NOT USE this burner. I believe the laser is not powerful enough when physically burning the disc. Many dvd players will skip, become pixelated, stop playing, or not play at all with the movies that I've burned. I've even had the error of dirty disc, please clean... when the disc was...

Strengths: Double Layer support, 16x +R
Weakness: Doesn't work with some cheaper +R/-R media. Created discs sometimes can't be read by other home DVD players.
I've been using various DVD-RW drives for over an year now. For some strange reason I keep running into different problems with this Liteon model. I don't know if it's compatibility issue with my hardware, or problem with my selection of blank DVDs. Sometimes it burns, and sometimes it doesn't. When it does successfully create a working copy, sometimes the disc can't be playerd in a home player....

Strengths: Fast, great price, great software bundle, multi-format DVD's and 4x Dual Layer Burning
Weakness: Can lock up sometimes if it shares an IDE cable with another drive, doesn't read semi-scratched DVD's as well as other drives.
Great for the price! I had a few problems with it locking up. It was sharing a cable with my other DVD drive (Pioneer 120S). I put them on separate IDE channels and now it runs very smooth. Many people will not have the option to do this (I have SATA so I could), but if it is going to be the only optical drive on your IDE cable then you'll be OK. For a side note, if you are buying this drive to...

The best writer on the market for...
Strengths: fast, accurate writer. Easy to setup and use and the best price for it's functions to boot!
Weakness: runs hot with a lot of use- could use a bay cooler if you plan on using it for long periods at a time.
The best writer on the market for the money and now that there is a firmware upgrade to make it 4x dual layer burning and 12x dvd-r burning it is one of the best. It is easy to use with nero and has very few errors when burning. It reads and writes on all the media I have tried, even the "great azo's" that none of my other writers would even recognize. Lite-on has always been an awrd winner as...

Strengths: Not sure yet
Weakness: needs firmware update and software update to work. Need to use UDF reader version2.5
This was the most frustrating product that I have ever purchased. But after a few trial and errors (there must be some reason PCWorld rated it so high) I finally am getting it to work. Initially when I tried to copy something to the drive it shut down my computer. I could not find driver or firmware updates on the Liteon website. I emailed them and they responded very quickly (within hours) with...
